Due to pandemic, the Russian government decided to create a platform for conducting online lessons at schools and universities.
In a short time, we needed to create a product of national importance. At the same time, most of the functionality was unique and had no analogues in the world.
Create a platform for online lessons tailored to the needs of educational institutions. For example, an electronic journal, conducting online tests, etc.
The team consisted of 30 people: product specialists, analysts, frontend and backend developers, devops. I was the only designer responsible for the design of the new product, but my solutions were checking by design lead.
Research
01
As an initial stage, I researched most of the main platforms for conducting online calls. Fixed functionality that could be useful in implementing a new platform, what could be done better, etc.
Focus group
02
During the work on the project, we regularly communicated with 2 focus groups: teachers and students. Initially, thanks to this, we were able to form an understanding of what functionality we need so that our platform takes into account the specifics of teaching schoolchildren and students. Also, teachers and students from the focus groups tested design prototypes, which were then finalized based on their feedback.
Teachers
• Grading during the lesson. • Use of audio, video, text materials. • Conducting tests within a single interface. • Managing who speaks. • Formation of groups.
Students
• Connect to the lesson from a mobile device. • Chatting. • Adaptation of the interface for children with vision problems.
Ethnographic User Research
03
During the acute period of the pandemic, all schools were moved to remote education. I did not miss the opportunity to observe how my nephew's lessons really go. For example, thanks to this, I learned that teachers often make notes during the lesson, and the final grade is most often given at the end of the lesson. I took it into account when developing the interface.
Prototyping
and Testing
04
The «Figma» functionality allows you to make a clickable prototype for users in a short time to make sure that we understood them correctly in the previous two stages, as well as take into account various details and proceed to the final design already taking into account the edits.
It is also worth saying that I conducted this stage regularly during the development of the project.
UI
05
Since the project is on a national scale and is used by people with various vision problems, the contrast of the interface meets the requirements of VSAG 2.1.
Final design
06
The interface is fully adaptive for all major devices. It is also possible to download a native app in the App Store and Google Pay for mobile devices and tablets.
Results

The service has successfully passed the tests and was launched first in schools in the Moscow region, then in the Leningrad region and gradually the regions of Russia are switching to this service.
